CommunityWhat ESA REALLLY SAID about Minecraft Servers
Unless you been mining under a cave, then you probably heard of the controversy of the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) mentioning, how running a private Minecraft server is "illegal". This instantly caused backlash and confusion in the Minecraft community, as many didn't interpret, what a "private minecraft server" referred to.On the 30th of June 2026, the vice president of the ESA mentioned during a senate hearing that "private community servers like those from the video game Minecraft, are illegal and considered "piracy". This one statement instantly sparked controversy in the community (Marnell. B, 2026). However this controversy only lasted 24 hours because on the 1st of July 2026. The ESA issued a clarification, saying "its representative was responding to a confusion discussion, where the terms "community server" and "private server" were being used interchangeably (ESA, 2026). The ESA also said it was referring to private servers that host or distribute copyright game content without authorization (piracy) and not ordinary Minecraft Servers like Hypixel and The HIVE, who follow the games rules (Scullion. C, 2026).
Personally I'm just surprised in how easily rattled the Minecraft community believed that a miss-interpretation by a company caused most people to panic and worry. If you think about it why would Mojang and Microsoft permanently remove Minecraft Multiplayer from the game? It wouldn't be a smart choice to remove it not knowing how millions of people play on these servers weekly. I'm also intrigued in how fast the media spreads controversy across the internet, as it only lasted one day. But I guess in some ways it also reflects the level of passion and energy in the Minecraft community, which explained how a headline caused shockwaves and panic across the community.
